Daycare Fails to Run Background Check; Employee Kidnaps Child
In Houston, Texas on Friday, April 11th, a little girl was abducted from her daycare by one of the employees. Fortunately, police were able to find both of them a short while later.
Shemika Thacker-Brantley, the mother of the girl who was kidnapped, is overjoyed to have her daughter back. She stated, “It was the worst day and best day of my life, all wrapped up into one.” However, she wants the daycare center held accountable because it failed to background check the employee who attempted to abduct her daughter.
Raeshala Rhylette Morris was charged with kidnapping. She had her own child taken away for physical neglect. Morris had been living in a homeless shelter and was working as a trainee at the daycare center. The family believes Morris tried to pass the little girl off as a boy, dressing her in different clothes and changing her hairstyle.
Childcare licensing will be investigating the daycare center to check child-to-staff ratios and to see if there have been violations in the past.
The daycare center owner has apologized to the family, but a simple background check on the employee in question would have avoided this incident, which fortunately this time, ended well.

It sounds to me that the person did not have a prior conviction, so how would a background check have helped? I think that anyone who works with kids should have a background check ran on them, but not every situation can be avoided. There are such things as first offenses!
All daycare center's should require background checks. That's just crazy that it wasn't done
this is ridiculous! if this person was homeless, how would the co-workers not know that something was a little "fishy"???
No kidding!
And this is a daycare -- this person may have been really nice, but c'mon, how could these people not see this coming?
Ridiculous.
Oh god a mother's worst nightmare
The entire HR department of that daycare should be arrested.
It sounds like there were two holes resulting in this. When license are issued to daycare providers all helpers/volunteers should be subject to background checks. Even the daycare itself should take measures to prevent this by doing their own background checks.
I'm sorry, but if I were the proprietor of a day care, I would sure as hell make sure I wasn't hiring someone who had her own child taken away. Shame on the business owner trying to save a few bucks!
